The Quantum Theory of Trust"
Who are the Hubs, Gatekeepers and Pulsetakers in your network?
We all know the mantra. The network IS the organization of
the present and the future. These human networks, loosely connected
by an intangible web of trust and knowledge, hold the true
power of todays formal and informal organizations. But
if you cant see them, how can you understand them, let
alone tap that wellspring of potential. In these days of virtually
non-existent competitive advantage can any of us afford not
to understand how to make our human networks visible?
Maverick social network theorist and anthropologist Professor Karen Stephenson has spent over 10 years working to understand the ties that bind and unwind human networks in our organizations. She calls her theory the Quantum theory of trust and it is at the forefront of a growing influential movement known as Social Network analysis.
From helping furniture designer Steelcase to create better office environments through the analysis of communication flows, to working with the Defence Department to identify the structure of terrorist networks the underlying principles are fundamentally the same. These networks all have certain people who play key networking roles. Those roles are defined by knowledge and bound together by trust.
